The machines are 600cc, which is a genuine step up from the entry-level quads most Tenerife tours run, and the climb takes you to roughly 2,400 metres on paved mountain roads with stops for photographs and for the guide to explain what you are looking at. Tenerife's volcanic story runs back tens of millions of years, and the caldera you ride into is the collapsed remains of an older, larger mountain.
It runs as a shared tour rather than a private one, but group sizes are kept small. Departure is from Granadilla de Abona in the south-east; an optional round-trip transfer costs about €5 per person from the strip between La Caleta and Las Chafiras, and hotel pick-up from Los Cristianos, Las Américas and Costa Adeje is available for a similar fee if you select it at booking.
One practical note that catches people out: if you are making your own way there, you need to arrive 45 minutes before departure, not the usual 15.
