This is where bookings go wrong. Five of the six tours set the minimum driving age at 18 with a valid licence. The exception is the Quad Adventure Tour, which requires drivers to be at least 25 and to have held a licence for two years — a rule that catches out young couples who book the most-reviewed tour precisely because it is the most reviewed.

Universally: bring the physical licence card. Every operator on this list refuses a photograph on a phone, and a rider turned away at the meeting point for that reason does not get a refund. If your licence was issued outside the EU, bring an International Driving Permit alongside it. Passengers need no licence at all and ride from age 6 or 7 depending on the operator, sometimes with a minimum height of 120 to 125 cm. What you actually get for the extra money

The $62 spread across these six tours buys three things: transport, time, and equipment.

Transport. At $66 the La Escalona loop includes nothing but the quad, the helmet and the insurance, and you get yourself to a village 40 minutes above Los Cristianos. At $93 the Quad Adventure Tour collects you from your hotel and returns you to it.

Time. Two to three hours at the cheap end, four hours at the top of the review chart. The four-hour route is longer because it starts at sea level and climbs the whole way; the three-hour rides start higher and spend proportionally more of their time at altitude.

Equipment. This is the least visible difference and the one riders notice most. The $66 and $70 tours give you a helmet. The Chío tour adds a thermal jacket, gloves and a full-face helmet — which matters enormously on its 19:00 sunset slot. The Granadilla tour goes furthest: 600cc machines rather than entry-level quads, plus back protectors, jacket, gloves and waterproofs, in small groups.

Best overall: the Quad Adventure Tour, $93. The longest route, hotel pick-up included, 4.8 from 1,671 riders — no other Teide quad tour has anything like that volume of feedback. Book it unless a driver in your group is under 25.

Best value: the Double Quad excursion from La Escalona, $66. Rated 4.8 from 308 riders, priced per quad rather than per person, and starting high enough that you spend the time riding instead of transferring. You need your own transport to the meeting point and a physical licence, no exceptions.

Best if you are in the north: the Puerto de la Cruz tour, $93. Highest rated of the six at 4.9, and the only one that offers a genuine off-road route — about 30 minutes of unpaved track through the Orotava Valley, chosen instead of the Teide route rather than as well as it.

Best for sunset: the 3h Chío tour, $116. Its 19:00 departure runs up the western flank, which holds the light longest, and it is the only sunset option that hands you a thermal jacket and gloves. If the budget will not stretch, the $70 sunset ride goes to the same mountain at the same hour with less kit and a 4.4 rating.

Best for nervous or particular riders: the Late Morning tour from Granadilla, $128. Small groups, 600cc machines, back protectors and a jacket included. Arrive 45 minutes early if you are making your own way there — the operator enforces it.
